Car Transfer FAQ

Frequently asked questions about transfers

General Questions

A transfer request allows you to request ownership of a car that’s currently registered to another member in the Lotus Elan Registry. This updates the registry to reflect current ownership after a sale or ownership change.

Use transfer requests when:

  • You’ve purchased a car from another registry member
  • You need to claim ownership of a car with duplicate chassis entries
  • A car ownership has changed but the registry still shows a previous owner

Yes, you must have an active Lotus Elan Registry account and be logged in to submit transfer requests.

Before Requesting a Transfer

Use the registry search function to locate the car by chassis number, year, or model. Verify the details match your vehicle before requesting transfer.

You need:

  • Accurate chassis number
  • Car year and model details
  • Reason for the transfer (purchase, etc.)
  • Any supporting documentation
  • Current contact information

No, you should only request transfers for cars you legitimately own or have purchased. False transfer requests may result in account restrictions.

The Transfer Process

The “Request Ownership Transfer” button is located on the car’s details page when you’re viewing a car that belongs to someone else.

Three things happen immediately:

  1. You receive a confirmation email about the initiation of the transfer process
  2. The current owner receives a notification email
  3. Registry administrators are notified for oversight

After a few days you receive an email about the result of the transfer process.

A registry administrator reviews every request. Timing depends on administrator availability rather than on the current owner, who is notified but does not decide the outcome. Once a request is approved, the transfer completes immediately. Requests expire automatically after 30 days if they have not been actioned.

The current owner sees your first name, email address, general location, and any comments you included. Full personal details are not shared.

The Current Owner’s Role

They are notified by email, but they do not approve or decline the request — that decision rests with a registry administrator.

The notification exists so the current owner is never surprised by a change to their own record, and so they can contact the registry if something looks wrong.

Nothing stalls. The current owner’s reply was never required — an administrator reviews the request on its merits either way. If you have supporting documentation (a bill of sale, for example), mention it in your request comments; it helps the administrator decide.

Yes, contact registry administrators if you believe a transfer was denied in error. Provide documentation supporting your ownership claim.

After Transfer

  • Ownership immediately transfers to you
  • The car appears in your registry account
  • You can edit car information and upload photos
  • The previous owner loses access to the car record

Yes, you’ll receive a confirmation email when the transfer is approved and completed.

Transfers are generally permanent, but contact administrators if there was an error. Provide documentation to support any reversal request.

Technical Issues

Possible reasons:

  • You’re not logged in
  • You already own this car
  • Technical issue — contact administrators

Check that the email address in your account is accurate, then check your spam/junk folder. If not found, contact administrators to verify your request was received.

Contact administrators to modify or cancel pending requests. Include the chassis number and reason for the change.

Special Situations

Transfer requests help resolve duplicate entries. Provide clear documentation of ownership, and administrators will help determine the correct owner.

Contact administrators with:

  • Purchase documentation (bill of sale, title, etc.)
  • Details of your attempts to contact the seller
  • Any other relevant information

If a car appears unowned, you typically wouldn’t need a transfer request. Contact administrators for guidance on claiming unowned vehicles.

Read it carefully. If it is legitimate — you sold the car and the details match — no action is needed from you; an administrator will review and complete the transfer. If it looks wrong, contact the registry straight away and say why. You cannot approve or decline the request yourself, but an administrator will not proceed over a genuine objection from the registered owner.

Support and Troubleshooting

Contact registry administrators for any transfer-related issues, disputes, or questions.

Include:

  • Subject: “Transfer Request — [Chassis Number]”
  • Your account information
  • Chassis number of the car
  • Clear description of the issue
  • Any relevant documentation

Administrators will review documentation from both parties and make a determination. Provide as much supporting evidence as possible.

Yes, each car requires a separate transfer request. You can submit multiple requests for different vehicles simultaneously.
